I always like to see when historically oppressed people succeed and prosper, so it makes me happy that the Yezidi community in Lincoln, NE is so active and organized. I recently went to a doctor’s office here and was greeted in Kurdish, I knew this was the result of local Yezidis’ activism and vibrancy.
Throughout history, Kurds have been oppressed in the region, and minorities such as Yezidis, Kakeyis, and Assyrians have had it twice as bad. The 2014 genocide in Shingal shook the world and all conscientious people… now, with dignity, the Yezidis are asserting their identity, culture, and plight on the world arena, especially here in Lincoln. I hope the future will bring cooperation and solidarity between all peoples, particularly Muslims and religious minorities in the region. Human rights must prevail.
